The First Rule of Training.

The first rule of training is you don't speak badly about your body while it's working.

The second rule of training is you don't speak badly about your body while it's working.

If this sounds familiar you may have seen or read "Fight Club" and that's what that moment looks like to me as your trainer, you just punched yourself in the face and I had to watch. As your guardian and chosen guide in the gym I cringe each time I hear this from a person who the longer I am granted time with the more I grow to love. I genuinely have a gut flipping reaction when everyone I know speaks poorly of themselves because for YEARS my brand of humor was self deprecation and once you realize words become things you make changes quickly.

Ultimately I do not want to hear it if it isn’t something I can take action on. I don’t want to hear your “I can’ts” I am not able to work with vague complaints and the battery of inquiry that usually ensues will frustrate us both. I’m not the average trainer or coach as has been pointed out to me by a lot of previous clients I ask a lot of questions and I watch you like Santa after you asked for a Nintendo. I see it all. I don’t feel what you feel as you move and that is the information I need. If it looks good but you’re in pain we can fix it. We can work around it and I can diagnose the weakness and pivot your session in a more productive direction. Strength of will is miraculous but you won’t win any medals for suffering through unnecessary pain.

Theres a symbiotic part of training that is not spoken about enough, how much I wish to help and how much I can deduce from you and the way you relate to your surroundings. From the way you hold your head up to the way your foot strikes the ground I can see the way you move through the world and I want to make you safer in it by making you stronger right now. Depending how you see it I’m making you harder to kidnap or less likely to fall down.

Not everyone comes to me asking for the body of a superhero most people want to feel better in the world or about themselves, many looking for a challenge. The key to being your best self is controlling the way you think because those thoughts will become your words and words are incredibly powerful. The phrase “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words can never hurt you” is incorrect words will wound you most of all and especially if your inner monologue is critical. What you think about yourself is so powerful and if you allow your “enemy” to live rent free between your ears it will come out your mouth in front of me and now I’m worried. I am truly concerned. There’s no weapon to use on your own ego you use love there and why I train to be a hero, I want to help you rewrite the script in your head.
