Sports Bras to Jump for Joy In

Holding onto your boobs if it’s going to be a jumpy workout is perhaps one of the unsung aggravations of being a fit woman. Everyone on earth has felt parts of them jiggle when jogging or hustling down the stairs. The best “cupholder” in those instances are our own hands! The only thing I ever want from a sports bra is for it to keep the girls covered up and strapped in. I’ll never forget the first super strappy lululemon bra I did double unders in while feeling the threat of a possible nip-slip. I find it exhausting how to this day I still encounter sports bras that feel as if they are crushing my diaphragm or just for fashion. If I’m working out I am going to breath and I need to be able to fully expand my lungs without sacrificing the stability of my chest.

Darby Sports Bra from Racefaster

Darby Sports Bra from Racefaster

Racefaster Darby Bra $46

Best for: A-C

I’m a fan of The Darby Bra I think running bras always have their head on straight when it comes to how they allow you to breath and they’re made to encounter the most impact. The Darby Bra feels like cotton but wicks like performance fabric. The brand is based out of Ridgewood by a man named Aidan Walsh who also coaches a running club by the same name. The gear is all made for running and is focused on performing with you.

Born Primitive Vitality Sports Bra

Born Primitive Vitality Sports Bra

Born Primitive: Vitality $45

Best for:A-C

I fell in love with this bra but I originally bought it because they had the best American flag print for me to wear during a Murph workout. I am such a massive fan I went right back and bought it in teal. Born Primitive apparel is astonishingly soft and durable and its honestly one of the most comfortable pieces I own I don’t know how they do it but it makes a great bra for any workout. Although the back straps are reminicient of the lululemon pieces they have a slightly higher cut neckline that gives you protection from the always terrifying nip slip. It has fashion it has function I can’t praise it enough.

Under Armour

Under Armour

Under Armour Mid

Best for:A/B

I could call this bra old faithful and although not lined it does keep you in check. It is by far the most excellent choice if you plan to sweat a lot because its thin and it wont absorb it and get heavy(gross, I know). The biggest aggravation I encounter with some performance apparel is how much it wicks and it stays in the fabric. Winter is an especially awful time to be damp during a workout and I love that this bra doesn’t make me colder in the already freezing conditions. I have been wearing this model or a version like it since Under Armour started making bras. I have some of their original cold gear I don’t know how they make such durable stuff but I’m thankful they do.

Brooks Juno Bra

Brooks Juno Bra

Brooks Juno Bra $65

Best for: C/D+

This is the bra I ALWAYS recommend to clients who are in the “gifted and talented” program to incredible feedback. I love running bras! I think that if something is built for running it can do the most in terms of support and I like this one personally because the soft straps are very comfortable. Moving comfort was an independent company until a few years ago when Brooks bought them and the brand seems to really be flourishing and from what I take it even improved with more colors and styles.

JoyLab for TargetHigh Neck Sports bra

JoyLab for Target

High Neck Sports bra

Joy Lab for Target $19.99

Best for: A/B

I’m so happy I wandered into Target and overspent as usual because these bras are so cute and astonishingly sturdy at wildly affordable price points. I find the bands do run a little loose and that made me size down strangling my girls but I don’t mind a snug fit as long as I can breath. These aren’t your investment pieces but filling out your wardrobe for lower impact days is vital and I was thrilled with the cute factor that washed incredibly well. I love that when I went to their website they organize their sports bras by impact because it’s honestly the best way to help people find the right one. My major gripe is the length of the straps. This is a problem I have with a lot of bras and I really like this high neck because it isn’t that high and the support is consistent all around.

Shopping in for sports bras can be as arduous as a good workout because the enter/exit process of sports bras is relatively nightmarish all on its own. If you’re having a hard time hunting one down that works for you, your best next step is to get measured because it’s all about the band.

How to Measure:

Your band must fit flat to your chest and back, the difference between the inches around your ribcage where the bra would lay and the fullest point of your breasts is your cup size.(I did work at VS but they don’t measure you right I learned this from a woman at a boutique) Knowing your true size will aid you in hunting down your perfect fit sports bra.

  • Ex: If you are a 30in around the ribcage and at the fullest point 31in you are a 30A and 30in around with 32in at the fullest point will be a 30B and so on. You also have to try on since manufacturers differ as does the tightness of fabric depending on the color it was dyed in. You will also see this in all apparel and shoes.

  • Cup sizes change and if you’re new to working out regularly you will see a change as your body composition changes. I have a lulu bra that has drawn blood after my back finally grew but I still wear it because I can breath in it and I like running in it.

  • Happy Shopping!
