Fashion in a Dad Shoe

Dad Shoes

Jaded by years of running and as an aspiring shoe dog I’m not surprised every model with a household name laced up a pair of dad shoes the moment they hit stores. It doesn’t take a podiatrist to see that what they were suffering on top of. I wonder if fall’s runways will sport smiles in place of scowls now everyone is happy with a bouncy foam core beneath them propelling them in fashions new direction and maybe a few personal bests. -I’m looking at you Kendall Jenner you’re related to Olympic Gold.- We’re all capable of going faster towards our passions if we have comfort on our feet.

The best part of being human is moving to me and I am biased as I get to move how I wish, whenever I wish. I personally delight in the popularity of sneakers and the boldness of Balenciaga swiftly causing the loudest commotion forcing an industry to track suit up. I personally went with a rose colored pair of the quintessential New Balance 990’s the legend in the land of “Dad Shoes” which I bought this weekend, a weird time for me to buy a piece of dad-gear for myself with Father’s Day staring me in the face. I don’t care for this holiday but I’m going to lace up my dad sneaks and see if those icky feelings don’t get left out on the track.

“Don’t reject a shoe because you can’t run in it. It’s okay not to run.”-Christian Louboutin

Don’t tell me what I can’t do Chris…Mr. Louboutin and I would have some disagreements about what a shoe is supposed to do, what your feet are meant to do, and most importantly what we evolved to do. We are the hairless primates that stand taller than our cousins based on the precise urge to run from predators or after prey. Art is subjective so I’ll have to stand by my adoration of the risky design house Alexander McQueen started and say if you want to make it art don’t half ass it.

Balenciaga is eating Moschino for breakfast and I am grateful to see clothes and shoes inspired by what I do and am passionate about hit the pages of the magazines I once stole from my lovely Aunt Joan who has always fed the inner diva in me. There’s nothing more courageous than throwing caution to the wind and doing as you wish toward your own dreams and while this little deviation from lacquered stilts may be short lived the sentiment will last and I could wear these to work.

“If you’re following your calling, the fatigue will be easier to bear, the disappointments will be fuel, the highs will be like nothing you’ve ever felt.”-Phil Knight, Co-Founder of Nike

For me there has never been comfort in Father’s Day. I didn’t know my dad well in contrast to athletic shoes inspired by beloved patriarchs that have accompanied me on long physical journeys providing the support my high arches needed. The Nike Monarch is my favorite of this band of all stars with it’s affectionate name that elevates the wearer to royalty. If you are a dad you are the leader of your family, the Monarch of your realm and in spite of the odds in the situation I am still rooting for the fashion gods smiling on the dad shoe.
